DIY Paper Bag Snowflakes

While I am obsessed with basically all of the things around the holidays, my most recent obsession is making these DIY paper bag snowflakes. Seriously, I can’t stop hanging and setting them everywhere. What makes the obsession even stronger is how easy and inexpensive they are to make…two of my favorite qualities of a good DIY project.

Keep on scrolling for the full (and easy!) tutorial.

Here’s what you will need to make paper bag snowflakes:

  • Paper bags (lunch bags work well, I also like these to make a slightly sturdier snowflake.

  • Glue sticks (I like these you could also use a hot glue gun, but I’ve found glue sticks to work the best)

  • Scissors

  • Tape (optional)

  • String

  • Hole Punch

That’s it, just a few items that you probably already have on hand. So let’s get started!

You will need about 11 or 12 brown paper bags to make these snowflakes. I have heard of a few people making them with less bags. The number of bags needed all depends the size of the bags themselves and how much of the bag you cut off, so take the 11 or 12 as a starting point and adjust as needed.

For this snowflake I used 12 bags and glued them one of top of the other using the glue sticks. Be sure to take a minute in between each layer to really press the bags down to be sure they are fully glued.

Next, get out the scissors and cut your snowflake. There is no right or wrong way to do this. Remember every snowflake is unique so have fun here!

Once you have made your cuts you will need to open up your snowflake. You will want to make sure that the ends connect here. If they don’t, no big deal; just grab another bag, glue it on top and make some additional cuts. You can also open up your snowflake before you make any cuts to be sure you have enough bags so you can cut all in one step.

Again, here is a step that you have options. I like to tape my snowflake together so that at the end of the season I can remove the tape and fold up for next year. You can also glue these it will likely hold a bit better but of course it won’t allow you to fold them and tuck those snowflakes away until next year. I’m all about making things as easy as possible and having a few of these ready at the beginning of the Christmas season feels like a win to me; totally your call though!

Now you will just need to grab that hole punch and make a hole where you would like to hang your snowflake. I always suggest hanging from the ends that you just connected to help it hold together best, especially if you tape yours.

All that’s left is to grab some string and hang your snowflakes and probably repeat about 10 times because they are just too fun to stop. If you have a sturdy enough bag you can also set these on a shelf or display in a different way, like I did here.

In case you’ve been skimming…

  • Cut out a pattern to make your snowflakes shape (remember they are all different)
