How to Create a Boho Farmhouse Bedroom

We spend so much time in our bedrooms. Basically, a third of our entire lives are spent here. Even if we are sleeping most of that time, I still believe our bedrooms should be a place of beauty and comfort. I mean, isn’t this the last thing we see before we go to sleep and the first thing we see in the morning. I can’t think of a better place to be both beautiful and comfortable.

Yet, so many of us neglect our bedrooms. As an interior designer, bedrooms are the space that clients specifically tell me is last on their list. And as much as I know the importance of a well designed bedroom space, I was in the exact same situation as most people. My bedroom was in desperate need of a refresh. While my bedroom had already come a long way since my initial renovation (check out the full home transformation here), it never felt right to me, never complete, never quite the space I had envisioned.

My style is a little boho, a little farmhouse, and completely inspired by the Minnesota Northwoods around me. I wanted to be sure my bedroom reflected this mix of styles. This is the design concept I created to guide me through the process.

Boho Farmhouse Bedroom Design Concept

What is boho farmhouse style?

Boho farmhouse blends the elements of bohemian style décor and more traditional farmhouse décor. When we think of bohemian style, we generally picture vibrant jewel tones and beautiful, bold patterns. When thinking of farmhouse décor, things like shiplap, wood tones, and classic furniture styles often come to mind. Boho farmhouse style beautifully mixes both of these distinct styles. When blending the styles you will often see the bold bohemian patterns toned down, in neutral, texture filled, shades and mixed in with those traditional farmhouse items.

How do you mix boho and farmhouse style?

When creating a boho farmhouse space, I generally suggest letting the large items in your space lean toward that farmhouse style and then bring in the boho with the smaller items and décor. I think this both creates a beautiful balance of the styles but also leaves you with large pieces that are likely to withhold the test of time (and if you’re anything like me, changing styles).

In my own space, I knew I wanted a vintage style metal bed. I wanted to keep things simple with the bed, as well balance out the wood shiplap that was already in the room, the new wood dressers I would be bringing in, and the pattern and texture I would later add to the space.

I knew a big part of that pattern would come in with a feature wall behind my bed. I have always loved a good stencil project and felt like this wall was perfect to stencil. This really brought in the boho vibes and added a pop of pattern to an otherwise relatively simple space. Here is the exact stencil I used on my wall.

What items should I include in a boho farmhouse room?

  • Plants

  • Wicker and other natural elements

  • Pops of bold pattern, generally in neutral tones

  • Throw blankets and pillows

  • Cozy rugs

  • Vintage decor

  • One of a kind items

Make sure you keep on scrolling for that “before” picture…seeing the transformation is always the best part, right?

Can you even believe the change between the before and after?
